Carbon fiber and aramid blended jacquard fabric: a model of cross-border integration of high-performance materials

In an era of continuous innovation of high-performance materials, carbon fiber and aramid mixed jacquard fabric has become the focus of the material field with its unique material combination and innovative technology. It cleverly combines the high strength and high modulus of carbon fiber with the high toughness and high temperature resistance of aramid fiber, and then gives the material a variety of structures and functions through the jacquard process. It is widely used in cutting-edge fields such as aerospace, national defense and military industry, and high-end equipment manufacturing, and promotes the development of various industries towards higher performance and more intelligent directions.

1. Definition and structural characteristics

Carbon fiber and aramid mixed jacquard fabric is a high-performance fabric made of carbon fiber and aramid fiber as the main raw materials, using mixed and jacquard technology. "Mixed" means that during the weaving process, carbon fiber and aramid fiber are interwoven in a specific proportion and manner to form a reinforcement system with complementary advantages; "jacquard" is a process of weaving a specific pattern, texture or functional structure on the surface of the fabric through computer-aided design (CAD) and advanced electronic jacquard equipment.

Structurally, this fabric exhibits unique composite properties. At the microscopic level, carbon fibers and aramid fibers are intertwined. Carbon fibers, with their extremely high strength and modulus, provide the material with a strong load-bearing capacity, enabling it to withstand large tensile and compressive loads; aramid fibers, with their excellent toughness, impact resistance, and high temperature resistance, effectively make up for the deficiencies of carbon fibers in flexibility and fatigue resistance. The synergistic effect of the two significantly improves the comprehensive mechanical properties of the material.

At the macro level, the jacquard process gives the fabric a diverse structure. By precisely controlling the interweaving of the yarns, patterns with a sense of relief, hollow structures or functional areas can be formed on the surface of the fabric. These structural designs not only enhance the aesthetics of the fabric, but more importantly, they can adjust the fiber distribution and interweaving density in different areas according to actual application requirements to optimize material properties, such as increasing strength in key stress-bearing areas and designing special textures in areas that require shock absorption.

2. Raw materials and production process

1. Characteristics and selection of carbon fiber and aramid fiber

Carbon fiber: In industrial production, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fiber has become the mainstream choice due to its comprehensive performance and cost advantages. Its density is about 1.7-1.8g/cm³, its tensile strength can reach more than 3000MPa, and its elastic modulus exceeds 200GPa. It has the characteristics of high strength, high modulus and low density. The selection of carbon fiber varies according to the application scenario. High-end fields such as aerospace often use high modulus carbon fibers such as T700 and T800 to meet the stringent requirements for material performance under extreme working conditions; while in the manufacture of sporting goods and general industrial parts, T300-grade carbon fiber is widely used due to its high cost performance.

Aramid fiber: Aramid fiber is mainly divided into meta-aramid and para-aramid. Meta-aramid (such as Nomex) has excellent high temperature resistance and flame retardant properties. It can be used for a long time in an environment of 260°C. It does not melt or support combustion when exposed to fire. It is often used in firefighting clothing, high-temperature insulation materials, etc. Para-aramid (such as Kevlar) is known for its high strength, high modulus and good fatigue resistance. Its strength is 5-6 times that of steel wire and its modulus is 2-3 times that of steel wire. It is widely used in bulletproof equipment, ropes and other fields. In carbon fiber and aramid mixed jacquard fabrics, the appropriate type of aramid fiber can be selected according to the functional requirements of the product, and it can be given more characteristics through special treatment (such as dyeing and functional modification).

2.Mixed jacquard technology

Blending process: The blending process requires precise control of the ratio and arrangement of carbon fiber and aramid fiber. First, the two fibers are made into yarns separately, and then they are combined into blended yarns according to the designed ratio through special spinning equipment. In this process, it is necessary to ensure that the two fibers are evenly distributed to avoid fiber agglomeration or separation to ensure the consistency of fabric performance.

Jacquard weaving: electronic jacquard looms are used for weaving. The pattern, structure and functional areas of the fabric are designed through CAD software, and the design data is converted into control instructions for the loom. During weaving, the jacquard mechanism independently controls the rise and fall of each warp yarn according to the instructions, so that the blended yarns are interwoven according to the preset rules to form a jacquard cloth with a specific pattern and structure. During the weaving process, key process parameters such as yarn tension, warp and weft density, and weaving speed need to be precisely controlled. The yarn tension must balance the characteristics of the two fibers to prevent breakage or looseness; the warp and weft density is adjusted according to performance requirements to optimize the strength and flexibility of the material; the weaving speed must match the response speed of the jacquard mechanism to ensure the clear formation of complex patterns.

3. Post-processing process

After weaving, the carbon fiber and aramid mixed jacquard fabric needs to go through a series of post-processing processes. The pre-curing process uses low-temperature baking to initially solidify the impregnated resin in the fabric and stabilize the structure; the cutting process uses high-precision equipment such as laser cutting to ensure neat edges and prevent loose yarns; surface treatment is performed according to application requirements, such as coating with wear-resistant coating, antistatic coating, anti-corrosion coating, etc., to further improve the performance and service life of the material.

3. Performance Advantages

1. Perfect combination of high strength and high toughness

The high strength of carbon fiber and the high toughness of aramid fiber achieve synergistic effects in mixed jacquard fabrics. When subjected to tensile loads, carbon fiber plays a leading role and provides strong tensile strength; when subjected to impact or vibration, aramid fiber absorbs energy through its own deformation, effectively preventing the material from brittle fracture. This combination of properties makes the material suitable for a variety of complex working conditions, such as structural components in the aerospace field, bulletproof equipment for national defense and military industry, etc.

2. Excellent high temperature resistance and flame retardant properties

The high temperature resistance and flame retardancy of aramid fiber endow the blended jacquard fabric with excellent thermal stability. In high temperature environment, the mechanical properties of the material decrease slowly, and it is not easy to burn when exposed to fire, which can effectively prevent the spread of flames and meet the needs of aerospace, fire protection, electricity and other fields with extremely high fire safety requirements.

3. Multifunctional integration

The jacquard process enables the carbon fiber and aramid mixed jacquard fabric to achieve a multifunctional integrated design. By adjusting the weaving structure and fiber distribution, multiple properties can be integrated on the same fabric, such as local reinforcement, shock absorption, sound insulation, electromagnetic shielding, etc. For example, in the manufacture of electronic equipment housings, conductive fibers can be embedded through jacquard design to achieve electromagnetic shielding functions; in building sound insulation materials, special jacquard structures are used to enhance the sound insulation effect.

4. Lightweight and design flexibility

Despite the fusion of two high-performance fibers, the carbon fiber and aramid blended jacquard fabric still maintains its lightweight advantage. Its density is much lower than that of traditional metal materials, which can significantly reduce the weight of components while meeting the same mechanical performance requirements. At the same time, the jacquard process brings a high degree of design flexibility, and the pattern, structure and performance can be customized according to customer needs to meet diverse market needs.

4. Application fields

1. Aerospace

In the aerospace field, carbon fiber and aramid mixed jacquard fabrics are used to manufacture aircraft fuselage skins, wing structural parts, engine insulation materials, etc. Its lightweight and high-strength characteristics can reduce the weight of aircraft and improve fuel efficiency; its high temperature resistance and flame retardant properties can ensure the safe operation of aircraft in extreme environments. For example, in the manufacture of the wings of a new passenger aircraft, the use of this material reduced the weight by 15%, while significantly improving the fatigue resistance.

2. National defense and military industry

The defense and military industry has extremely high requirements for material performance. Carbon fiber and aramid mixed jacquard fabrics are widely used due to their excellent performance.
